The festival opened
on Saturday 7th July with the historical/cultural exhibition
in Coleraine Town Hall. This was well supported throughout the day, with
about 500 people from various parts of Northern Ireland and further
afield visiting. We hoped to build on the exhibition so a visitor’s book
was available, giving people the opportunity to make comment on the
content of the exhibition and suggest items they would like to see
included in future.
The weather on
Saturday was very poor therefore numbers attending the junior 5-a-side
football competition and the children's fun day at The Crescent were
down slightly on 2006. However, everyone who braved the inclement
weather had a fun-filled afternoon.
The concert by the
Ulster Scots Experience in Coleraine Town Hall on Monday 9th
July was well attended by a good cross-section of ages, with many
positive comments about the performance.
The entertainment in
The Diamond on Tuesday 10th July was again affected by
adverse weather conditions; with people stopping only for a short time
to enjoy the music.
The Battle of the
Bands competition on Tuesday evening and the fireworks display were on
what was possibly the wettest evening of the week. The rain was so heavy
many people remained in their cars parked along Strand Road, the New
Bridge and Hanover Place to watch.
The entertainment in
The Diamond on Wednesday 11th July, the weather having much
improved, was enjoyed by considerably more people, many securing their
place well in advance of the start of the performance by the Ulster
Scots Experience. The various items of entertainment, including the
Irish dancing and historical weaponry display were also well received by
shoppers in the town centre.
Poor weather was a
contributory factor in attendance numbers at many of the events
throughout the week, but nevertheless many braved the elements to enjoy
the week's festivities.
The Festival offered
a varied programme of events which allowed the local community, as well
as visitors to the town, to sample and learn about the Orange/Ulster
Scots culture in a relaxed and enjoyable, family-friendly atmosphere.
