The Orangemen of Coleraine
used Brook Street Schools for meetings up until the early 1900's. At a
meeting of Invincible True Blues LOL 735 on 2nd September 1907 Brother
Thomas Crawford proposed that consideration be given to building a hall.
After a series of meetings a Building Committee was formed chaired by
Brother F H Watt, Grand Master of Co. Londonderry.
The site
for the hall was generously donated by the M.P. for North Londonderry
Brother H T Barrie and the foundation stone was laid on Easter Monday
28th March 1910. Special trains brought Orangemen from Belfast,
Londonderry, Magherafelt and other local Districts. A long procession
made it's way from Lodge Road across the Bann Bridge and back to Union
Street for the laying of the memorial stones by Mrs C E Stronge (for
Lady Bruce), Mrs F H Watt, Mr H T Barrie and Major J A Torrens
(representing Mr G H Moore-Browne).
Easter
Monday 17th April 1911 again saw Orangemen from the cities of Belfast
and Londonderry, South Londonderry and North Antrim join brethren from
local districts for the opening of the new hall. The Orangemen and
bands, headed by a company of Boy Scouts, made a circuit of the town
from Lodge Road by way of Long Commons, New Market Street, New Row, The
Diamond, Bann Bridge, Killowen Street, Bridge Street, Church Street and
Railway Road to the new hall in Union Street.
Mrs Barrie
performed the opening ceremony and she was presented with a gold key by
Brother Daniel Gray, Deputy District Master. The first function, a
social tea and concert followed by dancing, was held in the new hall
that evening.
A
management committee was formed of representatives from LOLs 5, 87,
316, 355 & 735 and RBPs 37 & 99, Brother S T Alexander was appointed
chairman and Brother Thomas Crawford vice-chairman. |
